Peverell Press is a publishing firm on the banks of the Thames. It's a beautiful house, built in the style of houses in Venice. But strange things are happening there - manuscripts are being changed, photographs for books are going missing, and when Mandy the temporary secretary arrives for her first day of work, a female employee's body is found in the tiny filing room at the top of the house. It is a suicide and the death puts a pall over the house. The new manager, Gerard Etienne, wants to sell the house and move the business to Docklands where rent is cheap, or else the business will go bust. The other members of the board don't agree but Gerard knows he'll eventually be able to bully them to follow his lead. Then one morning, Gerard is found dead, also in the small filing room at the top of the house, and Dalgleish and his team are called in. Was it accidental death or was it murder? This was a re-read for me. I enjoyed it, but the ending was a little unexplained - would have like another chapter or epilog to explain.
