I was pretty sure I reviewed this already, but if so then the intertubes swallowed it. Another something outside my usual preference, but a rewarding book. The plot lurches predictably through the horrors and absurdity of war and Russian winters. And while the horrors are horrible and the absurdities are absurd, there are no great mood swings of cringing or giggling, which is a plus in my view. What really makes this book a success is that Beniov has captured the archetypal "buddy" novel, without getting overly sentimental or melodramatic.
