Everyone's favorite befuddled bounty hunter gets another visit from the mysterious (and potentially supernatural) Diesel. He is looking to bring in Wulf Grimoire, who seems to have his own mysterious powers. Diesel has warned Stephanie that Wulf is tremendously dangerous, but she finds herself when she ends up on her own case. Martin Munch is a pint-sized quantum physicist who has gotten himself in trouble, and it is up to Stephanie to bring him in because he broke bail. Unfortunately for her, he seems to have teamed up with Wulf on his current project, which will lead for world domination. To make things more interesting, Stephanie also seems to have inherited a very intelligent monkey named Carl that was left on her doorstep. He, along with the usual cast of characters who can be found in Stephanie's world, adds no shortage of humor throughout her travails. Carl is a true master of the flipped bird and seems to be able to understand everything that everyone around him is saying. Diesel, Lula, and Stephanie find themselves repeatedly dragged into the Pine Barrens of New Jersey in this case that places Stephanie in the usual level of danger and the crazy antics that have made her and her friends so much fun to read. I have never really been a huge fan of the "Between the Numbers" books in this series, but this one was actually quite good. They are generally sidebar stories that don't add much to the series other than the new character of Diesel. Since I already like the romantic tension between Stephanie and Ranger and Stephanie and Morelli, I never really saw the need to have another guy be of interest with her as she stumbles through a living as a bond enforcement agent. This book makes the most of his "powers" and produces a fun and spooky tale.
